Holland Bloorview Hospital

Case Study

Executive Summary:

Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital (Bloorview) is Canada’s largest children’s rehabilitation hospital. Since 1899, Bloorview has pioneered treatments, technologies, therapies and real-world programs that offer children with disabilities the tools to participate fully in life. Today, Bloorview assists over 7,000 children each year, comprised of 600 inpatient admissions and 58,000 outpatient visits. Bloorview is a world-class teaching hospital affiliated with the University of Toronto – training in the field of childhood disability. The Bloorview Research Institute is located onsite, allowing easy integration of cutting-edge research and teaching with frontline care to improve every child’s quality of life. Bloorview’s state-of-the-art facilities have been recognized by the International Academy for Design and Health as “an inspirational building…which speaks to a child’s right to participate in our society.”

Since 2007, FlexITy has partnered with Bloorview to help them realize their vision of gaining the collaborative benefits from a state-of the-art data, voice, and wireless communications infrastructure. Based upon the Cisco Medical Grade Network platform, FlexITy has provided an environment that streamlines communications and offers the foundation for delivering medical applications that ensure their patients receive the best available healthcare.

Business Challenge:

Bloorview requires a communications network that:

  • Delivers timely support for its clinical, physician and administrative applications
  • Is always available
  • Is seamless to maintain and operate
  • Extends their medical grade network and the communications applications
  • Delivers a unified approach for personnel and resource management

Solution:

The FlexITy Healthcare team architected a centralized communications network (on a Cisco backbone) that offers a single data, voice, video, and wireless platform upon which critical patient applications are deployed.

As a result, all facilities are able to share enhanced applications through the adoption of a common voice and data infrastructure resulting in the more efficient sharing of ideas, technology and applications. FlexITy is currently working to extend the infrastructure platform to:

  • Link children with their loved ones via immersive video technologies
  • Enhance security throughout the campus via location-based services

Project Highlights:

All hospital systems are enabled within the Medical Grade Network designed with scalability to effectively provide advanced communications and integration with emerging healthcare applications such as infection control and patient monitoring; enhanced push to talk on wireless phones, enhanced contact centre for inbound and outbound patient management, and pervasive wireless across all locations.

Results:

The partnership between Bloorview and the FlexITy Healthcare team delivers enhanced communications through a converged network, lowering operating costs and capital budgetary costs, while offering a platform for efficiently launching new/emerging applications that will further enhance the patient and/or clinician experience.
